About the PSEO program
Perched on a bluff overlooking the Minnesota River valley in Mankato, Bethany Lutheran College offers PSEO students something scarce: a genuinely small private college where professors know everyone's name. Dual enrollment here means free tuition at a school where classes often have fewer than 20 students, a very different experience from a large lecture hall.
Getting in takes more effort than at most PSEO colleges. Beyond your transcript, Bethany asks for an essay, a letter of recommendation from your high school counselor, and test scores. Juniors and seniors qualify with a 3.25 GPA or a 23 on the ACT. The extra steps filter for students who actually want to be there, which shapes the classroom culture once you arrive.
The payoff for that effort is unusually broad course access. Admitted PSEO students may take any 100- and 200-level courses in the catalog, with only a few exceptions like private music lessons and most studio art. That open-catalog policy beats the restricted course lists some private colleges hand their dual enrollment students.
Why choose Bethany Lutheran College for PSEO
Nearly the whole catalog is open
PSEO students can register for any 100- and 200-level Bethany course apart from a handful of exceptions, so you build a schedule around your interests rather than picking from a short approved list.
Small classes with real faculty access
Bethany enrolls well under a thousand students, and PSEO participants sit in the same intimate classes as everyone else, where asking questions and getting feedback is the norm rather than a scheduling feat.
Two ways to qualify
A 3.25 GPA or a 23 ACT composite gets juniors and seniors in, so a strong test day can offset a transcript that undersells you.
A second college town option in Mankato
Mankato-area students can weigh Bethany's small liberal arts setting against the large public university across town and pick the environment where they will actually thrive.
Programs & courses
Writing and communication
Foundational composition and speech courses in small sections where drafts get real feedback, a strong base for any future major.
Sciences and mathematics
100- and 200-level biology, chemistry, and math courses that give pre-health and STEM-bound students rigorous preparation with lab access.
Humanities and social sciences
History, literature, psychology, and religion courses that fill general education requirements while sampling the liberal arts core Bethany is built on.
Business coursework
Introductory business offerings let students explore the field early, with credits that can seed a business degree at Bethany or elsewhere.
Campus & getting there
Bethany's 50-acre campus occupies a bluff in Mankato with views over the Minnesota River valley, about 80 minutes southwest of the Twin Cities on Highway 169. Students from Mankato East and West, Loyola, and nearby districts like St. Peter, Lake Crystal, and Eagle Lake are within a short drive. Bethany's PSEO is an on-campus experience, so plan for the commute; the trade-off is a walkable, close-knit campus where getting between classes takes minutes.
Will my credits transfer?
Bethany Lutheran College is regionally accredited, and its liberal arts credits transfer the way most private college credits do: the receiving institution evaluates each course against its own requirements. Standard 100- and 200-level courses in composition, science, and social science generally map cleanly to general education requirements at Minnesota's public and private universities, though there is no automatic MNTC guarantee since Bethany is not a Minnesota State school. Students continuing at Bethany apply every credit directly toward a Bethany degree.
