About the PSEO program

West-central Minnesota students have two front doors to the same college: Ridgewater College operates campuses in both Willmar and Hutchinson, putting free college classes within commuting distance for a broad stretch of farm towns and small cities between the metro and the South Dakota border. Ridgewater PSEO covers transfer-focused general education, career and technical courses, and online sections.

Applications here open early rather than closing late. Fall applications have been accepted since February 1, and spring 2027 applications open October 1 — so the smart move is applying months ahead, not racing a deadline. The date that can actually cost you money is the state's district notification requirement: public school students must notify their district by May 30 for fall, and Ridgewater's page warns that missing it can leave you on the hook for tuition.

Helpfully, Ridgewater does not slam the door on students who slip up. The college invites students who missed the notification deadline to email the PSEO office and work through their options — a more forgiving posture than most schools put in writing.

Why choose Ridgewater College for PSEO

Two campuses, one college

Willmar and Hutchinson campuses let students across west-central Minnesota pick the shorter drive while accessing the same institution and credits.

Applications open months early

Fall applications open February 1 and spring opens October 1, so organized students can lock in their spot and course picks long before the term.

A published path if you miss a deadline

Ridgewater explicitly tells students who missed the May 30 notification date to email the PSEO office — real guidance instead of a dead end.

Standard, reachable eligibility

A 3.0 GPA for juniors or 2.5 for seniors, each with a class-rank alternative, plus an MCA or Accuplacer route for sophomores taking CTE courses.

Programs & courses

  • Liberal arts and transfer general education

MNTC-aligned courses in writing, math, sciences, and social sciences that transfer to every Minnesota public college and university.

  • Career and technical education

Ridgewater's technical catalog opens applied career fields to PSEO students, and provides the CTE courses eligible sophomores are allowed to take.

  • Online course sections

Remote options help students from smaller districts around Willmar and Hutchinson participate without a daily commute.

  • Associate degree pathways

Full-time PSEO students starting junior year can stack credits toward an associate degree by graduation with advisor-guided planning.

Campus & getting there

Ridgewater's Willmar campus serves Kandiyohi County and the towns west toward the prairie, while the Hutchinson campus covers McLeod County and communities within reach of the west metro fringe. The two are about 45 minutes apart, so most students simply attend the nearer one; online sections fill in for anyone caught in between or scheduled tightly. For students in New London, Spicer, Litchfield, Glencoe, and dozens of surrounding districts, Ridgewater is the closest college of any kind — which is exactly the gap PSEO is meant to close.

Will my credits transfer?

Ridgewater's general education follows the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum, meaning credits satisfy gen-ed goal areas at Minnesota State universities and the University of Minnesota alike. Completing a Transfer Pathway associate degree earns junior standing at any Minnesota State university. Technical program credits primarily serve Ridgewater's own certificates and diplomas and transfer into related programs elsewhere, so students eyeing a bachelor's should weight their schedules toward the transfer catalog and confirm plans with an advisor.

Ridgewater College PSEO FAQ

For juniors, a 3.0 GPA or a class rank in the top third does it; for seniors, a 2.5 GPA or a rank in the top half. Sophomores heading into CTE courses need at least an 850 on the Reading MCA, or a 220 on Accuplacer Reading if they never took the MCA.
